In the current league-start landscape of Path of Exile 3.28, build diversity is once again one of the most exciting aspects of the game. Even after multiple balance passes, nerfs, and indirect changes to core mechanics like Tier 17 mapping and defensive layering, players still have access to a wide range of viable archetypes—from safe totems and auto-casting setups to fast melee clear builds and POE orbs.
This league especially stands out because several underused or reworked mechanics are finally finding their place. Below is a breakdown of some of the most interesting league starters and endgame pivots currently shaping the meta.

Bleed Bow Requarian – A Strange but Promising Starter

One of the most unusual builds gaining attention is the bleed bow Requarian setup. This ascendancy is still relatively underplayed, but that’s exactly what makes it interesting. Most bleed bow builds historically leaned on Slayer or Gladiator for consistency and scaling, but Requarian introduces a fresh angle with surprisingly solid survivability and flexibility.

The core idea revolves around early leveling with Split Arrow and transitioning into a bleed-focused bow setup. While the early game can feel slightly rough compared to more established league starters, the payoff is smooth scaling into mid and endgame content.

What makes Requarian appealing is its ability to combine decent defense with respectable bleed scaling, giving it a niche as a “comfort pick” for players who want something off-meta without sacrificing too much efficiency. It may not outperform traditional bleed setups, but it offers a refreshing alternative for those tired of standard archetypes.

Absolution Guardian – A Strong Buffed League Starter

One of the most recommended starters this league is Absolution Guardian, and for good reason. Recent buffs to Guardian ascendancy and Absolution mechanics have significantly improved both damage and quality of life.

Key improvements include:

Buffed Sentinel of Radiance

Improved Absolution Sentinel AI and uptime

Major buff to Vaal Absolution (now scaling up to 300% damage effectiveness)

These changes dramatically increase early and mid-game power, making Absolution Guardian one of the smoothest progression builds available.

Defensively, Guardian remains one of the strongest ascendancies in the game, offering layered mitigation and sustain. Offensively, the build can later transition into other scaling routes, such as Doryani-based setups or mana-stacking variants if desired.

However, even staying pure Absolution remains completely viable into endgame mapping and bossing. It is a true “league starter to endgame” archetype with minimal friction.

Cast When Stunned Chieftain – The Lazy Farmer Returns

The Cast When Stunned (CWS) Chieftain build continues its long history of surviving nerfs and system changes. Even after adjustments in previous patches, it remains a staple for relaxed farming playstyles.

This build primarily focuses on content like:

Ultimatum encounters

Simulacrum waves

High-density mapping with low mechanical input

The gameplay loop is simple: you get hit, you deal damage. This makes it one of the most passive-friendly farming builds in the game.

Although it traditionally relied on combinations like Bloodnotch mechanics, even after nerfs it still performs well due to changes in Tier 17 mapping and overall game pacing. The progression path usually starts with Righteous Fire, transitioning gradually into full CWS automation.

It’s not a build for speed or precision—it’s a build for comfort and consistency.

Cyclone Slayer – The Classic Spin-to-Win Returns

Cyclone Slayer continues to be one of the most recognizable melee builds in Path of Exile. With indirect buffs in 3.28, particularly the introduction of new support options like Void Shockwave, Cyclone has regained some of its lost strength.

The build remains attractive due to:

Smooth gameplay loop (constant movement and damage)

Large area-of-effect scaling

Strong mapping potential

One important note is cost scaling. New supports and optimizations may make early gearing slightly more expensive, meaning Cyclone often shines more in mid-to-late progression rather than day one.

However, even without premium setups, Cyclone remains a reliable and enjoyable mapping tool, especially for farming mechanics that reward speed and area coverage.

Kinetic Blast & Kinetic Fissure – Totem Meta and Variants

One of the strongest meta contenders this league is Kinetic Fissure Totems Hierophant. This setup combines powerful ranged scaling with totem safety, making it one of the most efficient all-rounders in the game.

Popular leveling routes include:

Firestorm into elemental skills

Absolution campaign leveling

Transition into totems midgame

The main strength lies in scaling synergy between totems and kinetic skills, paired with strong Hierophant defenses.

However, popularity comes with a cost. Key items like Aegis Aurora and other defensive staples may become expensive due to demand.

For players who like kinetic skills but dislike totems, there are alternatives:

Kinetic Blast Deadeye – faster, more aggressive mapping

Kinetic Fissure Warden – higher single-target potential, less defense reliance

Warden in particular offers a more damage-focused playstyle, trading survivability for bossing efficiency.

Venom Gyre Deadeye – The Reborn Speed Mapper

Venom Gyre has returned as a strong alternative after previous iterations like Cobra Lash lost effectiveness. The build now sits as a fast-paced mapping option under Deadeye cheap POE orbs.
